One on One: PADANI MOMENTS Interviews BVLGARI's Chief Watch Designer

The role of Fabrizio Bonamassa (Fabrizio Buonamassa) is particularly challenging as responsible for the design of the watches in BVLGARI, he maneuvers between the desire for innovation and maintaining the brand's tradition, and between the Italian nature of design and the engineering ability and know-how of Switzerland, where the watches are made. We asked him about his work, about BVLGARI and about design in general Here's what he had to say .

How did you become a watch designer? ?

I studied industrial design in Rome, and started my career in the automotive sector. I think a designer must be able to draw anything: chairs, cars, watches or airplanes. The most important thing is to find the design language or design expression that suits each category of products. .

How would you define the The design DNA of BVLGARI? What do you think your contribution is to This DNA ?

BVLGARI has a special taste when it comes to form and proportion. We use shapes and objects that come from different worlds, and manage to transform them into icons of luxury, as in the case of watches .  Tubogas.  This is something that characterizes Italian design in general, where bold use of materials and proportions "meets" the typical Italian taste. My role is to work within this historical journey and try to develop the symbolic identity of the brand to create new products for  BVLGARI

Do you think watch design is an artistic, technical, technological pursuit, or both? ?

I think it's a combination of the two. The design of a watch is not only technical but also aesthetic, because a watch should be unique and also be associated with its brand. .

to BVLGARI has a history of over 130 years. How do you face the challenge of looking forward without abandoning the past? ?

This is undoubtedly a challenge that every designer faces, trying to develop the symbols and signs that are associated with the brand, while at the same time respecting its history. .

What kind of watch? BVLGARI is your favorite ?

The next watch I will design ...

What is a design item that is not a watch or a piece of jewelry? Your favorite ?

The list is very long, and of course includes many icons of Italian design: a stool Mezzadro 's  Acille Castiglioni,  Televisions designed by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper for Brionvega, calculators Divisumma Q Mario Bellini designed for Olivetti, and many cars designed by workshops Touring, Pininfarina and Bertone.

From your professional experience, is the design of luxury watches more influenced by fashion or tradition? ?

In my opinion, it perfectly combines these two elements. .

What professional peaks would you like to conquer? ?

I guess being able to encapsulate the history and iconic design of BVLGARI in a new product .

If you had to choose a watch design from a competing brand, which one would you choose? ?

I would choose one that combines a brand's heritage with a clean design with very few visual cues. .

Which design museum do you consider to be -A must-see for any design enthusiast, and I would recommend visiting it. ?

One of my favorite museums is the Museum of Tate Modern in London .
